The T-38 is often the very first real saber that a force user will ever get to wield. While classified as a Tactical Trainer, the T-38 is still a full powered saber suitable for saber combat. The internal core of the T-38 is the same core found in sabers like the Antares.
What makes this saber excellent for training is the 'no frills' design. This both keeps costs down while also allowing the owner the ability to customize and modify the saber over time to their exact specifications.
Lore:
"We teach that the force has a light side and a dark side. I am beginning to wonder whether the force is the force and it is the wielder who is either light or dark."
-Grand Master Tiberia Oshan
The most storied force users in the galaxy all have one thing in common. At one point, they were students. However, before a Master will take on an apprentice, the hopeful initiate must first attend one of the many Force Academies throughout the galaxy.
These schools teach the initiate the basics of the force and saber combat. Once the initiate has proven themself capable, a Master may then choose them to become an apprentice.
In introductory saber combat, initiates use training sabers, like the T-23 and T-31. These sabers are only strong enough to give a light shock and deflect very weak blaster bolts from a trainer drone. The T-38, however, is not that kind of saber. It is a full powered saber used for tactical training. The low cost of the saber and the simplicity of the hilt is what makes it excellent for that role.
Due to being full powered, the T-38 is only issued once the student reaches an advanced level of saber proficiency and earns the right to accompany their instructors into the field. The galaxy is a dangerous place, and young force users are often seen as targets of opportunity. Having a weapon capable of deflecting full power blaster bolts is important to surviving this phase of training.
While many choose a new saber once reaching the level of apprentice, some see no reason to switch. Many masters throughout the galaxy still have their original T-38 and some still use them in combat to this day.
